Interviewing and Placement I pray that you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday and
have managed to avoid getting sick with the various flu viruses that have been
running rampant this fall. I for one have much to be thankful for every day of
the year. Let us embark on our next to last article in our series on making
volunteers stick.
Most people do not like interviews and may question the
necessity for one when the position to be filled is that of a volunteer. Let us
review some reasons why interviewing is so important.
- Interviews let you nudge volunteers in the right
direction
- Interviews let you minister to potential
volunteers.
- Interviews give you permission to do background
screening.
- Interviews help you refer volunteers.
- Interviews get the right people in the right
jobs.
As important as it is to do interviews it is just as
important to have an interview and placement process in place. Below are six
suggested steps.
- Create a Children’s Ministry Volunteer
Application. This must include references, experience and the information required
to conduct background checks.
- Perform an In – Person Interview. This is
primarily a discussion of what is on the Volunteer Application. The background
check should be completed and available before this meeting.
- Make and Offer – or Not.
- Post Placement Follow Up. Check in with the
volunteer and his or her coworkers after 2 – 3 weeks to see how things are
going.
- 2 Month post placement follow up.
- Celebrate. Remember to recognize your volunteers
for their service.
Following these few guidelines will be invaluable and will
assist you in having the checks and balances in place to have the right people
in the right place at the right time.
Next month we will finish our series on Volunteers That
Stick and it will also be my last article. I have felt a calling from the Lord
to move into Women’s Ministry and will be obedient to his wishes. I have
thoroughly enjoyed sharing with you these past months and am hopeful that the
information has been helpful. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you
and your family a blessed Christmas season as we celebrate the birth of our
Lord and Savior.
In Him,
CJ Schindler
