Writing Job Descriptions
Imagine for a second trying to do a job without knowing what
is expected of you, what you can and cannot do. I personally would be totally
frustrated by this. It is important in any type of job to have a guideline to
follow. The same is true for your CM workers no matter how big or small your
church is. Job descriptions are essential. Here are some advantages of having a
job description.
- It proves that you have thought things through
- It helps you figure out who you need
- It is something tangible to hand to potential
volunteers
- It can be used in interviews
- It is valuable when performing evaluations
If you do not currently have job description for your CM
staff at your church here are some guidelines to follow when creating them.
- Have a Job Title – keep them simple and clear
- Clearly define the goal of the position – make
it clear what you want a person to accomplish not just what they are expected
to do.
- State the position to whom the volunteer reports
to. For example your Nursery Attendant may report to the Nursery Supervisor.
- Provide a brief description of the job.
- State the approximate time required per week for
the position – remember this includes the time it takes to prepare for a lesson
for example.
- Define the expectations for the term of the
commitment - 3 months, 6 months etc.
- Include a description of the training that will
be provided.
- List any special skills or qualifications the
position may require.
Once completed, job descriptions will be invaluable in
helping you place the right people in the right jobs at the right time.
